Dr. William Stowman is Chair of the Department of Music and Director of Instrumental Studies at Messiah University in Grantham, PA where he teaches trumpet, directs the Jazz Ensembles and Trumpet Ensembles. He is the recipient of the Robert and Marilyn Smith Award for Excellence in Teaching at Messiah University, and has also earned the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Citation of Excellence in District 7 for teaching at the collegiate level. In 2008, he was honored to serve as the conductor for the Pennsylvania All State Concert Band.
Dr. Stowman began his musical career growing up in the small Western Pennsylvania town of Brockway where his primary music teachers were Donald Routch, George Monaco and Nancy Hills. He holds the Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from IUP where he studied trumpet with Dr. William Becker. He earned the MM and M.MusEd from Eastern Kentucky University where he studied with Dr. Kevin Eisensmith. He earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Trumpet Performance from the University of North Texas where he studied with renowned trumpet pedagogue Keith Johnson as well as John Holt, Principal Trumpet in the Dallas Opera Orchestra. At North Texas, he studied conducting with Eugene Migliaro Corporon.
As a trumpeter, he has performed and recorded with the Messiah University Faculty Brass, Messiah University Wind Ensemble, The Harrisburg (PA) Symphony Orchestra, The Lexington (KY) Philharmonic, The San Angelo (TX) Symphony, the North Texas Wind Symphony under the direction of Eugene Migliaro Corporon and the Keystone Wind Ensemble under the direction of Jack Stamp. He also serves as principal trumpet in the Harrisburg Opera Orchestra and is a clinician for Edwards Trumpets. In 2009, he served as host of the International Trumpet Guild Conference in Harrisburg, PA. Currently, Dr. Stowman is working with jazz artists Terell Stafford to create a book of cross-training studies for jazz and classical players.
Dr. Stowman is a member of the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association, the Music Educator’s National Conference and The International Trumpet Guild. He serves on the Board of Directors for the National Trumpet Competition and the Central Pennsylvania Friends of Jazz. Since 1998, he has served as the Music Director and Conductor for the Greater Harrisburg Concert Band. He resides in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania with his wife Lynn and their four children.
